A Symbolic Heist
Swift premiered the music video during his Eraz tour stop in Kansas City on July 7, where he played Lautner, Invited King and Presley Cash to join the stage, who also star in the video। The video, which Swift himself wrote and directed, features a trio of actors sneaking into the vault to save Swift, Which is trapped inside with its Speak Now cover art। The video is full of references to action, Easter eggs and Swift’s past and present।
According to Swift, the video is a symbolic representation of how his fans have helped reclaim his music from his former label, Big Machine Records, Who sold his master recording without his consent। Swift is re-recording her first six albums to gain ownership over her songs and give them a refreshing sound।
A Tale of Three Taylors
In an Instagram post, Swift explained the concept behind the video and praised her co-stars for their performances. She also revealed that King and Cash had previously appeared in her ‘Mean’ music video when they were kids, and that Lautner did all of his own stunts.
WELL. SO. I’ve been counting down for months and finally the ‘I Can See You’ video is out. I wrote this video treatment over a year ago and really wanted to play out symbolically how it’s felt for me to have the fans helping me reclaim my music. I had my heart set on @joeyking, @taylorlautner and @helloimpresleycash starring in it. Joey and Presley had been in the video for ‘Mean’ when they were 9 and 13 and they are back and so ridiculously bad ass!! Taytay is INCREDIBLE in this (didn’t have a stunt double!) and shout out to Tay Lautner for being so awesome to hang with on set. The tale of 3 Taylors I always wanted to direct fight scene/a heist storyline and had the most incredible time plotting this out with my amazing DP Jonathan Sela. So proud of this one.
Lautner, who dated Swift briefly in 2009 and inspired her song ‘Back to December’, also shared his appreciation for Swift on Instagram. He posted a photo of him and Swift hugging on stage, along with a heartfelt caption.
What an honor it was to be a part of this incredible project with @taylorswift. She is not only one of the most talented artists of our generation but also one of the most genuine, kind, and generous people I have ever met. Thank you for trusting me with your vision and for being such a joy to work with. I can’t wait for everyone to see this masterpiece.
King, who has been friends with Swift since they met at the premiere of The Lorax in 2012, also expressed her gratitude for being part of the video. She posted a series of photos from the set, including one where she is holding a gun and wearing a mask with Swift’s signature red lips.
I can’t believe I get to say this but…I’m in @taylorswift’s new music video for ‘I Can See You’!!! This is truly a dream come true and I’m so grateful to Taylor for inviting me to be a part of this amazing project. She is not only an incredible artist but also an amazing friend who has always supported me and inspired me. I had so much fun shooting this video with @taylorlautner and @helloimpresleycash who are both so talented and badass. Thank you Taylor for making me feel like a super spy/hero/villain/whatever you want to call it. I love you so much!!!
