Royal Caribbean World Cruise: Royal Caribbean International, one of the world’s largest cruise lines, has announced the cancellation of its highly anticipated world cruise, which was scheduled to depart on December 10, 2023. The world cruise was a 274-night voyage on the Serenade of the Seas, a Radiance-class ship that can accommodate up to 2,490 guests. The cruise was supposed to visit 65 countries and 150 destinations across six continents, including Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Europe, Africa, and South America. The cruise was also supposed to feature exclusive experiences, such as a private concert at the Sydney Opera House, a visit to the Great Pyramids of Giza, and a safari in South Africa.

The world cruise was sold out within hours of its launch in March 2021, with prices ranging from $61,499 to $199,999 per person, depending on the stateroom category. The cruise was expected to generate more than $200 million in revenue for Royal Caribbean.

Why was the Royal Caribbean world cruise canceled?

In an email sent to the booked guests and travel partners, Royal Caribbean said that the world cruise was canceled due to the “ongoing COVID-related circumstances around the world, and in an abundance of caution.” The cruise line said that it was unable to deliver the planned itinerary and experiences due to the changing travel restrictions, port closures, and health protocols in different countries. What are the options for the affected guests?

Royal Caribbean said that it will provide a full refund to the affected guests, which will include any non-refundable deposits, taxes, fees, and pre-paid gratuities. The cruise line said that the refunds will be processed automatically within 14 days of the cancellation.

  • A 25% Future Cruise Credit (FCC) based on the total cruise fare paid, which can be used on any Royal Caribbean sailing that departs on or before December 31, 2024, as long as it is redeemed by May 31, 2023.
  • A complimentary upgrade to the next stateroom category, subject to availability, on any future Royal Caribbean cruise booked by May 31, 2023, and sailing by December 31, 2024.
  • A $500 onboard credit per stateroom on any future Royal Caribbean cruise booked by May 31, 2023, and sailing by December 31, 2024.
  • A complimentary one-year membership to the Crown and Anchor Society loyalty program at the Diamond Plus level, which offers benefits such as priority check-in, complimentary drinks, discounts, and more.
  • A reimbursement of up to $200 per guest for any non-refundable travel expenses, such as airfare, hotels, or car rentals, incurred for the world cruise, upon submission of receipts.

Royal Caribbean said that it will also honor the original pricing and promotions for the affected guests who wish to rebook the same or a similar world cruise in the future, when it becomes available.

What are the reactions of the affected guests?

The cancellation of the world cruise has disappointed and frustrated many of the affected guests, who had been looking forward to the once-in-a-lifetime experience. Some of the guests had quit their jobs, sold their homes, or made other life-changing decisions to embark on the world cruise.
